Master Stanley, 8th Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
Master Stanley breaking 5 flaming boards
Master Stanley started Taekwon-do when he was a teen in Smithers, British Columbia. He was (and is!) a natural athlete and Taekwon-do gave him a challenge he loved. He started competing as a red belt and was bit by the competition bug. He competed in as many Taekwon-do competitions as he possibly could, and sometimes there were not enough of them so he competed in open tournaments against Kung fu and Karate black belts demonstrating the incredible speed and agility of Taekwon-do kicks.

He started his own club in 1986 and taught out of a community hall in St. Albert. Soon, he was running a club of 80 students. During all his teaching and training, Master Stanley would travel to train with the founder of Taekwon-do, General Choi Hong Hi. The General used him over and over to demonstrate techniques to the crowds. The General would ask questions to students at seminars and Phoenix students would answer the questions and he would say "Very good, who is your instructor?" the student would answer "Mr. Stanley" and the General would respond "Very good instructor". Master Stanley was tested by the General for his 3rd, 4th and 5th degrees and by the General's son (Choi Jung Hwa) for his 6th degree.

Master Stanley lives and breathes Taekwon-do. He is a full time instructor, the President of ICTF of Canada, and the Executive vice president of ICTF.

In his free time (which is rare!), Master Stanley loves playing with his 2 Rottweilers and hanging out with his daughters. He gets to the lake when he can to waterski, and always enjoys a good science fiction movie and book. Cool Fact: He's a talented soccer player.

Master Stanley mainly teaches at the St. Albert, Graminia, Elizabeth Finch and Stony Plain locations and occasionally makes appearances in Devon and Beaumont.

Mr. Passmore, 4th Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
                        Mr. Passmore
Mr. Alan Passmore began his Taekwon-Do training in the fall of 1993 in Beaumont, after watching a couple of his son’s classes.  “At that time, I trained to spend time with my son and for the fitness aspect, and had no idea where my Taekwon-Do training would take me.”, says Mr. Passmore.
After his first instructor, Mr. Martin Gillette, left Beaumont Taekwon-Do Club to focus on his new family, Mr. Passmore began training under Mr. Gilles Magnon.  Mr. Passmore successfully challenged his 1st Degree Black Belt exam with Master Stanley in June of 2000, and took over the head instructor position at Beaumont Taekwon-Do in January of 2001.  He has been Beaumont’s head instructor ever since.  Mr. Passmore currently has his 4th Degree Black Belt.
Over the past 17 years, Mr. Passmore competed in many Taekwon-Do tournaments at the local, Provincial, National, and International levels, and still competes whenever he can.  Rarely has he come home without medals.  Mr. Passmore holds his Level A Referee certification, which permits him to referee at all tournaments.
Asked what he enjoys most about Taekwon-Do, Mr. Passmore said, “What really brings a smile to my face is seeing students progress and grow beyond their own expectations.  Watching a young child, who began their training as a shy and timid person, come out of their shell and become more confident in themselves is the best!  I also enjoy the camaraderie that is part and parcel of our club and organizations.”
Mr. Passmore’s training credentials include several International Instructor Courses with the founder of Taekwon-Do, the late General Choi, Hong-Hi; Patterns and Sparring Seminars with pioneers of Taekwon-Do, and other Grand Masters and Masters; regular Referee/Umpire training; and most recently, the 2010 ICTF of Canada Instructor Training held in August of this year.
Mr. Passmore is a voting member of the International Ch’ang Hon Taekwon-Do Federation, and is the current Secretary General of the ICTF of Canada.

When not concentrating on Taekwon-Do, Mr. Passmore also likes camping, scuba diving, riding his Harley, spending time with his 4 year old grandson, and reading.

Mr. Johnson, 4th Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
                        Mr. Johnson
Micheal Johnson began his martial arts training in the fall of 1993 at the Stony Plain dojang the first year Master Stanley began teaching in this small town.  He first saw Master Stanley and the Phoenix black belts when they performed a demonstration at the Spruce Grove mall that previous summer. “Training in the Stony club started as a family activity. Both my sister and brother in law, as well as my aunt and two cousins started in the same year.  We trained, tested, and attended tournaments both in and out of town together. Phoenix wasn’t, I should say isn’t, only a local martial arts club, it is my extended family.” An interesting note as well is that Mr. Johnson is the only remaining member of the Stony Plain location who started training since the club was originally opened.

Mr. Johnson has been training in Taekwon-Do since he was 11 years old. He is currently on his 16th year with Phoenix Taekwon-Do, and has had the privilege of training with Master Stanley since his first day. Mr. Johnson tested for his 1st degree black belt at the age of 17 under Master Stanley at the St. Albert dojang. After teaching in St. Albert and Stony Plain for 4 years, Mr. Johnson was given permission to open the Devon location in 2005. Mr. Johnson tested for his 4th degree black belt in May of 2008.

Mr. Johnson has competed at the local, provincial, regional, and international level over the past 16 years. He loves to compete, however even more fun and challenging for him is refereeing and helping to run tournaments. “I love to compete in the men’s sparring division, but what I really enjoy is helping with the shadow warrior obstacle course division. Watching our young martial artists have a great time is the absolute best part of tournament day. My hope is that a few of them will love the art as much as I do and one day take my place, helping future black belts attain their goals.”

Mr. Johnson has attended several International Instructor courses, is a level A referee, is a voting member of the ICTF, and is currently the treasurer for the Phoenix Taekwon-Do club in Devon and for the ICTF Alberta chapter. Mr. Johnson has also held several positions with the Phoenix Taekwon-Do club board of executives over the past 10 years, including president, vice president, and treasurer.

In his time away from the dojang, Mr. Johnson likes to walk his German Shephard Kody with his family. He also enjoys camping and travelling during the summer, spending time with his niece and nephew, and bike riding in the back trails of Devon.

                        Picture
Ms. McKenzie kicking Ms. Preisinger in the head!
Ms. McKenzie has been training for almost 15 years. She is also the FIRST woman to ever wear a 4th degree from Phoenix Taekwon-do. Considering Phoenix has been around for over 20 years, that is quite the feat. She has out done her female predecessors by attaining 4th degree. Perseverance Perseverance Perseverance! She competed on the gold medal winning junior team that travelled to Argentina in 2002. She also competed in Las Vegas in 2005 on a team winning a gold medal in team pattern. Ms. McKenzie has won her fair share of gold medals over the years and is still the one to beat in pattern competition - she even has the men beat on this one. She trains mainly in St. Albert, and teaches Wednesday nights there.

Ms. McKenzie finished her degree in Biology Sciences with a specialization in Genetics. Her second degree is in Education. She is super smart, so if you have science homework questions, she is the one to call. She loves to bake (her cookies and brussel sprouts ROCK). Cool fact: She enjoys carpentry.

Ms. McKenzie teaches Friday evenings in St. Albert and regularly coordinates Taekwon-do events like the Phoenix Taekwon-do Halloween Food Drive.

Mrs.Stanley  started her Taekwon-do when she was 12 years old after her mom thought it would be a good idea to try something new. At first, she just trained because her mom insisted she learn self defense, but between the fun classes and cool instructors, she fell in love with the art and has never turned back. Over the last decade, she has competed in every tournament held by the ICTF in Western Canada and has competed in 7 international competitions. Mrs. Stanley is actively involved in the ICTF and ICTF of Canada, promoting Taekwon-do and running events. She teaches Shadow Warriors and some regular classes. If you attend one of Mrs. Stanley's classes, be prepared to kick up a sweat!

In her free time, she practices yoga as a cross training exercise for her Taekwon-do training. She is also working for her Business Administration degree in Marketing. A few of her favourite things are Star Trek, xbox and Las Vegas. Cool Fact: She is a certified ZUMBA Fitness instructor.

Mrs. Stanley teaches Monday evenings in Stony Plain, Wednesday in St. Albert and Saturday morning regular classes in St. Albert. She is the lead instructor for the Shadow Warrior classes.  She also teaches ZUMBA Fitness Monday nights in Stony and Tuesday nights in St. Albert

Ms. Johnson, 3rd Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
                        Ms. Johnson
Ms. Deona Johnson first started Taekwon-do to improve her overall well being and learn some basic self defense. She started with another organization in 1997 and trained up to red belt level.  Although the training and exercise was good, there was no sense of camaraderie or loyalty, so she looked for another organization that would suit her and her then 8 year old daughter, Lisa.

Deona and Lisa joined Phoenix TKD in 2002 and immediately noticed the atmosphere was family oriented and friendly. They both joined for the exercise and stayed because of the strong sense of family as well as the realization that there was still so much to learn and so many opportunities to compete, to assist with instruction, and further their understanding of the art.

Ms. Johnson has been competing internationally since 2005 and continued training throughout her recent pregnancy. In fact you will often see her 3 year old son, John, at the Dojang where he feels completely at home with the Phoenix family. She continues to compete and referee at tournaments and instructs classes at the Stony Dojang, and is also President of the Alberta ICTF chapter. She sees no end to her training as long as there are classes and seminars to attend, and her next goal is to obtain her 4th Degree.

Ms. Johnson is a full time Junior high School teacher during the day, and when Ms. Johnson is not at the Dojang she enjoys working on her home and spending time with her children and family pets.

Ms. Lisa Johnson, 2nd Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
Miss Johnson started Taekwon- do with her mom,
Ms.  Johnson. She first joined with the Phoenix after school program at Graminia
School to develop self esteem. Joining in grade three, Miss Johnson was a
little  unsure about how she would like the program. Now she is a second degree
black  belt and isn't looking to stop anytime soon! With so many friends and
opportunities to brighten her students' days, Miss Johnson hopes one day to run
her own after school program. Miss Johnson has been competing
internationally since 2005. From Vegas to Puerto Rico, Miss Johnson is
thankful  for all the opportunities she has been given to broaden not only her
horizons,  but increase her experience with other clubs and organizations world
wide. Her  favorite tournament so far has been England 2010 because of the many
different  people and clubs she met from the U.K. Although she doesn't always
win, Miss  Johnson knows that every tournament will increase her knowledge of
the art. She  loves to ask questions and further her understanding of Taekwon-
do. Miss  Johnson is currently the head instructor for the Shadow Warrior
program at  Phoenix West Edmonton, and loves helping her students understand the
moves by  encouraging them to yell their answers as loudly as possible! She
started  helping with Shadow Warriors as a red belt, and immediately knew this
would be  her career. Although a decade has gone by, Miss Johnson remembers all
the caring  black belts who helped build her confidence, and thanks her Phoenix
family for  their constant support and willingness to further her education.

When  she isn't holding the shield for her students or perfecting her
own hooking  kicks (they're her favorite kick!), Miss Johnson can be found in
her studio  working on her art pieces, wrestling with her 180 pound puppy, or
fine tuning  her violin. One day she wishes to own a pet skunk (with the scent
glands  removed!!!), and become an art teacher. Cool fact: Miss Johnson is
                        colour  blind!

Ms. Jen Millen, 1st Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
                        Ms. Millen
Ms.Millen began doing Taekwon-do when she was nine years old. She started her Taekwon-do instruction under Mr. Terry Moser of Edge Martial Arts, who trained under Master Stanley. His duty to the military called him to transfer to Manitoba, so Ms. Millen began her training with Phoenix and achieved the level of black belt. She has competed in several tournaments throughout her Taekwon-do career and hopes to join Team Canada in Toronto October 2011.

In her free time she enjoys going to movies, practising MMA for fitness,  competing, and quading. Cool Fact: She never wears matching socks!

Ms.Millen teaches Shadow Warriors and the regular classes on Wednesday nights in St. Albert. She is an exceptional young woman and will only keep excelling in her Taekwon-do teaching and competition careers.

Mr. Reza Raheem, 1st Degree Black Belt

                        Picture
Mr. Raheem started his Taekwon-do journey when he was 12 years old. He had some previous experience training in Karate, but when his karate school closed, his parents enrolled him at Phoenix. Originally, Mr. Raheem was not very interested - he came because his parents felt is was a good form of structure, as well as physical activity. He was a student who coasted along, not really putting too much effort into it, but he slowly moved up the belts. However, one summer, something changed - Raheem earned the rank of Red Belt and it was like a fire sparked. He suddenly was training regularily and with enthusiasm - his parents couldn't keep him AWAY from Taekwon-do! He kept working hard and earned the rank of 1st degree black belt on December 18, 2010. His hard work paid off at the 2011 Taekwon-do World Cup, earning 2 gold medals for his divisions. He enjoys participating in demos and working on his flexibility so he can master Specialty Techniques (crazy kicks, multiple targets). His goal is to do a split kick (a kick that breaks 1 board at each foot while doing the splits in the air) while the boards are on fire like Master Stanley has done in a demo.

Fun facts about Mr. Raheem - his parents are from the West Indies. He is also very fashionable!

The words of wisdom that helped him get where he is: "I've failed over
and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed." -Michael
