                        Who we are

Phoenix Taekwon-do is a non profit organization that was founded by Craig Stanley in 1986. Phoenix Taekwon-do teaches traditional Chang-hon style Taekwon-do created by General Choi Hong Hi. Phoenix is dedicated to teaching Taekwon-do and it's tenets of Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit to the community.

Brief History of Phoenix Taekwon-do and founding member Craig Stanley

Master Stanley started his Taekwon-do in 1981 in Smithers, British Coloumbia. He started training under Mike Lough who ran a school under the guidance of Mr. John Roussell and worked his way to his black stripe.

Soon after earning his 1st gup, he was transferred to Edmonton for work and started looking for a club to train with. He found a club in Camrose and trained to his black belt. When his co-workers heard that he was a black belt, they started encouraging him to run classes for fellow employees - from seven orginal members Phoenix Taekwon-do grew to upwards of 1000 students.

In this time, Master Stanley trained with General Choi, the founder of Taekwon-do, on his techniques. He was tested for his 3rd, 4th and 5th degree black belts under General Choi, and was often chosen to perform techniques for the General to demonstrate exceptional skill. His skills were tested in competitions all over Canada and he was named Western Canadian Champion (in Sparring and Pattern competition) five years in a row.

Master Stanley has dedicated over 30 years of his life to training and teaching Taekwon-do. His passion for the art is well portrayed in his exciting teaching style and encouraging words that push students to be the best they can be.
